In this episode, we’re exploring how goals and strategy interact and why one cannot function well without the other.

[00:40–02:00] Goals as the Destination

Melinda:
Goals define what you are aiming for. They are the destination — moving from where you are now to where you want to be. Without clarity about the destination, any success is likely to be accidental rather than intentional.

Investing time in clarifying goals is essential before investing effort in strategy.

[02:00–03:30] Strategy as the Means, Not the Goal

Melinda:
Many organisations confuse strategies with goals. For example, saying “we need a youth group” sounds like a goal, but it is actually a strategy.

The real goal might be discipleship, community connection, growth, or providing a safe space. Once the true goal is clear, it becomes possible to assess whether a youth group — or another approach entirely — is the best strategy.

Melinda:
Strategy exists to account for all the variables that influence whether a goal can be achieved. Like shooting an arrow at a target, strategy considers distance, conditions, capacity, resources, timing, and risks.

Without clarity about the target, even well-executed actions may fail to produce meaningful results.

Melinda:
Organisations often rush both goal-setting and strategy. Goals are assumed rather than clarified, and strategies are copied from elsewhere without sufficient consideration of context.

This results in weak alignment between what an organisation wants to achieve and what it actually implements.

[06:00–07:30] The Role of Strategists in Clarifying Direction

Melinda:
Leaders may have a strong sense of calling or direction, but that does not automatically translate into a well-designed strategy. Strategists play a critical role in helping articulate goals clearly and translating vision into coordinated, achievable action.

It should not be assumed that every leader is naturally equipped to do this work alone.

Melinda:
While clarity takes time, it does not need to be burdensome. Clarifying goals and strategy should be an engaging, thoughtful process rather than a rushed one.

When organisations slow down to explore purpose, context, and direction, strategy becomes more effective, sustainable, and enjoyable.

For strategy to work well, goals must be clear, realistic, and shared. Strategy then becomes the thoughtful coordination of decisions that bring those goals to life in a way that fits the people and context involved.
