[00:15] The Question Behind the Episode

What’s the difference between vision, goals, and strategy?

This question comes up often, especially when leaders feel stuck or frustrated. Sometimes it sounds like these terms are interchangeable — and in many contexts, they actually are used that way.

[01:05] Vision as a Distinct Concept

Vision tends to stand apart from the other terms.

Across most organisations and industries, vision usually speaks to direction, purpose, or the future an organisation is moving toward. Even when it’s not clearly articulated, people generally treat vision as something distinct.

[02:10] Interchangeable Language Across Contexts

Goals, objectives, and strategy, however, are often used interchangeably — and this varies by industry.

In some contexts, what one organisation calls “strategy” might be described as “goals” somewhere else. In other settings, objectives function like strategies, or strategy becomes shorthand for a list of actions.

This isn’t necessarily wrong — but it does create challenges.

[03:20] Why This Causes Confusion

When people use the same words but mean different things, misalignment is almost inevitable.

Teams may think they are in agreement, when in reality they are operating with different assumptions about what is being discussed or decided. This can lead to frustration, stalled progress, or repeated conversations that never quite land.

[04:30] Context Shapes Meaning

The meaning of these terms is often shaped by industry, organisational culture, and past experience.

What matters most is not adopting a universal definition, but developing shared understanding within a particular context. Without that shared language, it’s difficult to move forward together.

[05:40] The Importance of Clarity

Clarity around language helps leaders know what kind of conversation they are actually having.

Are we talking about direction?
Are we talking about outcomes?
Or are we talking about how we intend to move forward?

Naming this clearly reduces confusion and increases alignment.

[06:45] Closing Reflection

Vision, goals, and strategy don’t all do the same work — but they are often treated as if they do.

The key is not perfect definitions, but shared understanding.
